It’s that time again co-eds, time for school! You’re wondering what to pack – or what you need to buy. If it’s your freshman year you may be curious what the other girls on campus will be wearing, and if it’s your last year you may be thinking it’s about time you upgrade your closet. CL is providing you with 10 essential items that are a great go-to for a closet upgrade.

1. Bandage Skirt
This is a great buy, because it can be very versatile. You can pair it with a crop top, a flowy shirt and tuck it in, or a longer shirt and throw on a blazer, and it will continue to make you look slim. It is a must for any classy co-ed.
2. Heels
A pair of black heels are a must for your closet. They can spice up a dress or a pair of skinny jeans while making your legs appear longer and leaner.
3. Belt
A belt is an item that can be used to complete an outfit by putting it over a dress, skirt or shorts.
4. Business Casual
You never know when that interview for your dream internship will come up, or you have a meeting for a professional group on campus. Having a wardrobe of business casual is always a plus.
5. Bandeau
A bandeau can be a lifesaver especially when you don’t want to be “that girl” wearing a bra under her see through shirt. It is a classy way to look cute, while still sporting the crop top or a lace shirt over the bandeau.
6. Little Black Dress
Every classy co-ed should have one of these hanging in her closet, because it is the most versatile item they can own. It can be worn for a business event under a blazer, recruitment or to a formal.
7. Skinny Jeans
Another vital clothing item to have in your closet is a pair of skinny jeans. You can wear them to class, or wear them out with the girls paired with a cute top and heels.
8. Cardigan
Cardigans are a great addition to any outfit for style, or throw it over your shoulders for warmth. They come in handy more than you think!
9. Clutch/Bag
For class you’ll need a place to put your laptop and books, and for the weekend a place to put your cellphone, money, and camera.
10. Plain Tees
For the days you can’t decide what to wear, to the nights you need to match your bottom with a certain color – plain tees are essential for every classy co-ed.

Layers – Heating Up Fall Fashion

Autumn is on its way, bringing crispy leaves that crunch on the sidewalks, apples ripe for picking, college football games with plenty of school spirit, and, of course, fall clothes! This year, keep toasty in the cool weather by wearing layers. These light pieces travel easily, from class to dinner to club meetings, and they do not take up much space in those cramped dorm and apartment closets. Here are some ways to incorporate a layered look into your fall wardrobe that will warm you up in winter, too.

Stay cozy in class by wearing a cardigan! Cardigan from Old Navy, tank top from Hollister, jeans from 7 for All Mankind
Cardigan Sweaters
It is rumored that Coco Chanel, a woman noted for her chic and flattering designs, popularized the cardigan for female fashionistas. Naturally, this timeless style is still popular today and can be a versatile addition to a classy co-ed closet. Add interest to a plain cardigan by wearing it with a patterned or lace-embellished tank top; pair this look with jeans for the perfect ensemble to wear to class in those freezing lecture halls. Take sleeveless dresses into the cooler weather of autumn by throwing on this cute variation of a sweater. Dressed up or dressed down, the cardigan can accompany a variety of outfits.

Keep yourself warm when lounging around the dorm in a long-sleeve tee! Graphic tee from Delias, Long sleeve tee from Aerie, Yoga pants from Gap
Long Sleeve Tee Shirt
Are you looking for a way to take those summer tees and tanks into chilly autumn? Try putting a long sleeve tee shirt or thermal under a short-sleeved item to stay warm and comfortable around the dorm. A shirt with a hem that hits below the wearer’s behind would look nice with leggings. If the shirts are any shorter, try this combo with classic denim or cute sweatpants. On a side note, you can wear these shirts by themselves as well. With so many ways to incorporate thermals and long sleeve tees into different outfits, they are a cost-effective update to any casual wardrobe.

A sophisticated blazer is perfect for a supper with your family or a date! Blazer from American Eagle, dress from Topshop, necklace from Modcloth.
Blazers
Cutting-edge co-eds might like the sophistication of a blazer when dressing up for a date or dinner with the family. Take this businesslike jacket out of the suit to stay warm when going about business as usual. A plain top and jeans are made more formal with the addition of a blazer; it instantly adds polish. Carry a short-sleeved or sleeveless dress into the cooler months by pairing it with a blazer for a look that is fun and flirty. With a classic silhouette free of trendy embellishments, this jacket can stay a part of any classy wardrobe for years to come.

How To: Avoid a College Fashion Slump
September 22, 2009 by Caroline
Filed under Careers, CL ExCLusives!, Fashion, Fashion, Lifestyle, Shopping Bag, The Intern Dish
Why do you want to do this?
It’s three or four weeks into the semester… you’re starting to be up late studying and writing essays… you don’t have the energy to do laundry, and those sweatpants are looking very tempting as a wardrobe option for your 9 am class….
Stop. Put down the garment with the elastic waistband and back away!
(P.S. Keeping in mind the college financial slump that usually sets in around this time every semester- I’ve based many of the examples around an affordable favorite- Forever 21!)
Step 1
Just say no to hoodies! There are some wonderful comfrotable fashionable alternatives out there- keep it classy and wear them!

Forever 21 Zipper Trim Sweater

Forever 21 Cap Sleeve Cable Cardigan

Forever 21 Melodie Knit Jacket
Step 2
Just say no to ugly sweats! To keep your lower half comfy and cozy- try yoga pants instead.
I just LOVE American Apparel yoga pants- plus, they’re made in the U.S.A.

American Apparel Cotton Spandex Jersey Yoga Pant
If you’re willing to splurge… try lululemon athletica pants. They are so comfortable, and they make your behind look AH-mazing- check them out!

lululemon athletica Groove Pant*R
Step 3
Accesorize!
Adding a snazzy accessory piece to any outfit will make you feel (and look!) a lot more put together.
-A scarf-

Forever 21 Fab Dotted Swiss Scarf
-A pretty headband-

Forever 21 Twin Bows Headband
-A brightly colored bag-

ModCloth Brick Lane Bag in Green
