Why I am excited about being an intern with College Lifestyles: I love meeting so many new, classy ladies across the country, writing articles that can relate to women nationwide and sharing tips and advice that can positively impact young women in our society. I truly value people and places to go for current, helpful tips on staying classy in an environment that often encourages un-classy behavior.

Classy Causes: Facts on Fair Trade

Lately, I’ve been having a string of bad luck. Just every little thing that could go wrong did. I was sick, exhausted, stressed, and verging on seriously depressed. Like so many other classy co-eds, I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself and am often pretty stressed out. All my recent bad luck made me a little insecure and so I took some time to think about what I really think is important in life. Even as a child, I wanted to make a difference in the world. Now, as a college student, I occasionally feel so useless because I can’t afford to donate to charitable causes very often, so I’ve been seeking out more practical ways to help out and supporting fair trade is one I recently heard about at a lecture and want to share with all of you.

    What is it?:

    • Fair trade is NOT a charity. It is about using a more equitable exchange system to create sustainable change for producers.
    • Fair trade organizations create partnerships with their suppliers and help support the communities they come from.

What do fair trade organizations do?:

    • Create opportunities for economically and socially marginalized producers
    • Develop transparent and accountable relationships
    • Build capacity
    • Promote fair trade
    • Pay promptly and fairly
    • Support safe and empowering working conditions
    • Ensure the rights of children
    • Cultivate environmental stewardship
    • Respect cultural integrity

How does fair trade make a difference in the world?:

    • Tangible benefits include the building of schools, construction of wells for clean, easily accesible drinking water, sending children of producers to school, and income generated from fair trade sales helps pull communities out of poverty.
    • Intangible benefits include revival of cultural techniques, increased biodiversity, increased value of women in their communities, and positive community development in developing countries.

    How can I help?:

    • Buy fair trade products. Tons of different products are available, from clothes and home goods to coffee and chocolate.
    • Ask your local merchants to carry fair trade product lines.
    • Tell other people about the fair trade mission.
    • Work or volunteer for a fair trade organization.

For more information, you can visit www.fairtradefederation.org (where I got the majority of these facts). I’d also like to thank Jessica Canfield, the Executive Director of Mustard Seed Fair Trade, for introducing me to the cause.

Kat McClain is a College Lifestyles intern who enjoys spending time with family, friends, and her amazing Alpha Chi Omega sisters, volunteering, and learning about new causes. She is currently trying to figure out what to do with the rest of her life and desperately counting down the days until Spring Break.

    Have Your Happiest Year Yet!

We all have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, so this year, why not make that pursuit a little bit easier? There are tons of simple ways to make yourself happier, and a lot of them don’t cost a thing and don’t take more than a minute. So what are you waiting for? Read my tips below to start of your new year happily.

    1. Make a mix full of music that cheers you up.- I don’t know about you, but I have some go-to songs that boost my mood no matter what. Even after really horrible breakups, friend feuds, and even bad grades, my guilty pleasure song “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus never fails to put a goofy smile on my face. Just pick songs that have happy memories associated with them (like “Party in the USA” reminds me of going dancing with my girlfriends during my freshman year of college and my sorority winning homecoming). Put the mix on whenever you want a reason to smile.

    2. Look up laughing babies on YouTube.- My older brother taught me this one. I once told him that I was having a bad day and he forwarded me a link to the most adorable giggling baby (and no, I’m not one of those baby-obsessed girls. Honestly, I prefer puppies, but it’s impossible to feel unhappy while looking at a laughing baby). Also, one of my best friends and I watched all of Grey’s Anatomy last summer and now whenever I’m sad, she sends me all kinds of hilarious Grey’s clips.

    Awwww... Just too adorable :)

    3. Work out.- I know, I know, you hear it all the time. Working out boosts endorphins and all that jazz, but seriously, it’s such a win-win. You’ll feel better, it’ll take your mind off just about anything, and you’ll be healthier too! A girlfriend and I go to a Zumba class at the gym together once a week, and it makes me feel incredible (not only because I feel healthy and accomplished and happy, but also because it’s like the friendship equivalent of date night and making time for the people you love is yet another wonderful happiness boost).

    4. Take a deep breath and look up.- I know it sounds a little silly. I thought so too when I read it in a magazine, but I’ve tried it out in times of relative desperation (I have the worst luck with running into people at awkward moments), and it actually works. It kind of instantly clears your head, which helps lower stress and makes it easier to deal with whatever is going on, both of which will leave you happier in the long run.

    5. Volunteer your time!- When I’m actively participating in volunteer activities, just knowing that I’m putting some good out into the world makes me feel happier all the time and extra happy when I get to actually do philanthropic work and see how I’m helping out. Also, the people you meet while volunteering almost always enrich your life in ways that can make you happy far beyond just this year.

There are tons of other tricks to feeling happier and I’d love to hear some of yours if you want to leave me some comments below. Good luck and have your happiest years yet!

College Lifestyles CEO Makes a Stop at Marquette University!

Shelly Marie Redmond, MS, RD, LDN, Executive Director/CEO of College Lifestyles spread the word of good health and nutrition as the guest speaker of ,Campus Cafe:  A Guide to Fighting the Freshman 15 and Eating for Energy, sponsored by the lovely ladies of Alpha Chi Omega.

YAH! Just about to get started with the presentation :)

    In Shelly’s words…..

I had such a wonderful time at Marquette.  The ladies of Alpha Chi Omega were absolutely welcoming, lovely, and such a joy to work with.  Before I even arrived, the ladies set up fabulous marketing and PR for the event.

The morning of the event, I went to breakfast at a DELICIOUS campus favorite (which it is embarrassing I can’t think of the name, probably because my French toast was so YUMMY it blocked my thought process!

After the event, I had a great conversation with some of the ladies on what else, sorority life!

To wrap up, I had a blast!

Thank you so much Alpha Chi Omega at Marquette! Always keep your wonderful spirit and personality!’

    Healthy Halloween Snacks

    October 26, 2010 by
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Lifestyle, Nutrition, What We Love

There are a lot of scary things about Halloween, but the calorie count doesn’t have to be one of them. I know that as a classy co-ed, staying healthy isn’t always so easy. A lot of the time we’re on a budget, and, let’s face it, fast food is a lot cheaper than most healthier options. Also, a lot of us just don’t have the time to find healthy solutions. Well, I’m here to help. :) Grab your girls (or your guy! Baking can be fun bonding time for him too.) and make some healthy pumpkin themed yumminess for Halloween this year.

*Side note: Pumpkin is one of those delicious and also super healthy foods. It’s benefits include: fiber, vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids to help prevent cancer and heart disease, boost immune function, and keep your skin and hair healthy!*

Pumpkin Cookies!- I like this recipe from Very Best Baking (http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/32364/Old-Fashioned-Soft-Pumpkin-Cookies/detail.aspx) These were delicious and easy to make. Plus they turn out really pretty, so you can wrap them in cellophane and tie a ribbon around the top for a cute Halloween surprise for your friends or sisters.

Pumpkin Granola Bars!- I found this recipe here: http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/32364/Old-Fashioned-Soft-Pumpkin-Cookies/detail.aspx and added in craisins, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and pumpkin pie spice for a little extra flavor. I also left out the wheat germ, but kudos to you if you’re brave enough to try it. It’s super healthy! You could also try dark chocolate or peanut butter chips for a little bit more fun, depending on what you like. These are awesome because they don’t have anything overly processed in them too.

Pumpkin bread!- I love to buy this at Starbucks with my favorite fall flavors (Mostly Salted Caramel Hot Chocolates lately- so delicious!), but it’s so much cheaper to bake a couple of loaves at home. So I hunted down this great recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Baked-Pumpkin-Bread/Detail.aspx. These are awesome because you can freeze them for later (for up to 3 months!) so you don’t get pumpkin overload trying to eat all that bread before it goes bad.

Kat McClain is an intern with College Lifestyles and a student at the University of Missouri. She is so proud to be a Tiger and an Alpha Chi Omega following another successful homecoming (Mizzou’s 99th) and in love with eating pumpkin flavored things, drinking hot chocolate, and listening to Taylor Swift.

A Few of My Favorite Things

    August 31, 2010 by
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, The Intern Dish, What We Love

As a new intern here at College Lifestyles, I thought it might be nice to kind of introduce myself to everyone with the short list of the things that I love the most (because the long list would never be finished).

    1. My mom- I have the most wonderful relationship with my mom, and I’m so glad to have such a strong, positive, graceful, and classy woman to look up to. If you’ve ever seen the show Gilmore Girls (another one of my favorite things), we’re actually not unlike Lorelai and Rory.2. Music- I love all kinds of music. On a bad day, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, or the music from Glee can almost always cheer me up. On the flip side, when I’m in a good mood, there’s nothing better than an upbeat tune to keep me pumped up. I love to dance and to sing along to all my favorite songs (especially during impromtu dance parties with my sisters and on the car ride home from school to do laundry).
    3. TV on DVD and on the internet- I love tons of TV shows, but because I’m extremely busy (double major, Greek life, early graduation, June LSAT, other campus activities, social life, etc.), I almost never get the chance to watch them on TV. Therefore, I have become a Hulu.com addict. I can watch current shows on my own time, anywhere I can get an internet connection. Also, I can watch shows that are off the air now (Will and Grace, Gilmore Girls, Friends, and Sex and the City mostly) and shows that come on cable channels that I don’t get at school (True Blood and Dexter) whenever I want to and over and over again.

    4. My best friends- In addition to some of the best sisters in the world, I have the most incredible group of best friends back home and from living in the dorms last year. While sisterhood is a friendship unlike any other, having best friends outside of my letters isn’t something I would ever give up.

    5. Wild Cherry Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Soy White Chocolate Mochas, and Pumpkin spice lattes- As much as I love to sleep, I find it happens a lot less often than I’d like, so I am also pretty heavily caffiennated most of the time. I love Starbucks coffee (and my new RED tumbler that donates a percentage of my coffee purchase to charity) and around lunch, I usually choose one of my guilty pleasure sodas.
    6. My planner, dry erase calendars, and other organizational type stuff- I love, love, love the feeling I get when all of my stuff is in the right place and easy to find when I need it to study, write papers, take notes, or whatever. My planner and dry erase calendars (one weekly and one monthly) help me keep track of due dates, fun sorority events, meetings, and plans with friends. With a schedule as busy as mine, writing every little thing down is one of the only ways to stay sane.

    7. My wonderful sorority sisters- Here at Mizzou, home of the Tigers, we just finished formal recruitment, and I’m so excited to welcome our new members into our fantastic sisterhood. My sisters are always there for me when I need a laugh or a hug or a shoulder to cry on. Going through sisterhood week and recruitment week with them since I moved in to our lovely house in early August has been an absolute blast.

    8. Jewelry- I love to dress up my preppy (think Sperry boat shoes, Miss Me jeans, and Hollister graphic tees and polos) style with fun, romantic, and vintage-y jewelry whenever possible.

    9. Magazines- I love to just curl up listening to Lady Antebellum or Justin Beiber (yes, I have the fever) reading Cosmopolitan or Glamour from cover to cover. It’s a nice way to relax and unwind from a stressful day or recover from a big test. I love reading the style, hair, and make-up tips (although I’m usually too timid to try most of them).

    10. Flowers and butterflies- I am allergic to pollen, but I absolutely adore receiving flowers. I love red carnations (my sorority’s flower), peonies, roses, lilies, orchids, and Gerber daisies especially. Butterflies remind me that things really do change, since all butterflies start out as caterpillars and then transform into something beautiful with just a little bit of hard work. Flowers and butterflies remind me that there really is so much beauty in the world even on my worst days.

I hope that was a fun little insight into my personality and I’m so excited to be writing for College Lifestyles. Hopefully you’re excited to read more too.

    XOXO,

    Kat =)

Kat McClain is an intern at College Lifestyles (TM). She is also a junior at the University of Missouri-Columbia, studying psychology and communications. She is currently obsessed with the song “Teenage Dream” and the new student center on Mizzou’s campus.

It’s Not Goodbye, It’s See You Later!

    May 6, 2010 by

ill-miss-youThis week is finals week for a lot of people, and that means the end of the year is in sight. Which, sadly, means that you will be separated from your friends and sisters for 3 whole months! If you’re anything like me, that makes you really, really sad. But, never fear! In this day in age, there are so many ways to keep up with everyone over the summer! Here are some ideas of ways to keep in touch:

    • ooVoo- You’ve probably heard of Skype, but I like ooVoo even better. ooVoo allows you to video chat with up to 6 people at once! Last summer, my friends and I set ooVoo dates and we could all catch up at the same time! It was really great to “see” everyone, and we had some really fun chats!
My friends and me ooVoo chatting last summer!

You can even play around with the effects to make for some entertainment!

You can even play around with the effects to make for some entertainment!

    • Pen pals- I know it seems old school to write actual letters, but think about how exciting it is to get mail! Our recruitment chair for my sorority is sending us all snail mail letters, and I have to admit, I am really excited about receiving real mail! Plus snail mail letters last forever and it will be a lot of fun to look back in a couple years and remember what you wrote about.
A handwritten note to a friend might mean a lot to them!

A handwritten note to a friend might mean a lot to them!

    • E-mail – For those of you who maybe don’t like snail mail or prefer to keep in touch more often than it takes to send letters back and forth, there is always e-mail. I receive so many non-personal e-mails like all the things I subscribe to and stuff, that is a nice surprise to get an e-mail from a real live person! Plus, e-mail does have the benefit of talking multiple times a day where as snail mail takes longer. Make sure you get your friends’ personal e-mail addresses since a lot of people may not check their school e-mails as often over the summer.
How exciting will it be to get a personal e-mail instead of all that junk!?

How exciting will it be to get a personal e-mail instead of all that junk!?

    • Twitter- Not on twitter yet? It’s a great way to keep up with your friends over the summer! Over Christmas break, my best friend got Twitter and we had so much fun messaging back and forth! Plus, it’s a great way to know what they’ve been up to. And since you can tweet from your phone, it is easy to keep up with!
Get your friends to join Twitter & tweet each other!

Get your friends to join Twitter & tweet each other!

    • AIM- Yes, I know no one has used AIM since like 7th grade, but there are actually a lot of great benefits. Like the chat room feature. Last year, my friends and I started our own private chat rooms on AIM and we had a blast! I was on there for hours sometimes just chatting away! AIM is the only instant messaging service to have chat rooms; you can’t chat with more than one person at once on Facebook Chat, can you?! Try it out… trust me, it’s fun!
Remember AIM Chats?! They are a lot of fun and a great way to catch up with multiple people at once!

Remember AIM Chats?! They are a lot of fun and a great way to catch up with multiple people at once!

    • Facebook- Of course Facebook is a great way to keep in touch. You can see each others pictures, chat on the IM feature, write on each others walls… you get the drift. No matter what kind of communication you are looking for, more than likely Facebook offers it. Plus it’s pretty much guaranteed your friend is on Facebook since even parents are on Facebook these days.
Facebook offers lots of great ways to keep in touch over the summer with your friends!

    • Phone Call- I know with all the modern technology, actually picking up the phone and calling someone seems weird, but it is ok to do! Since it’s so rare to call people these days, think about how exciting it will be for your friend to get an actual phone call! Set a phone date, like every Sunday night you call each other and catch up on each others lives. That way, you’re not catching them at a bad time, and it is right after the weekend, so they might have some good stories to tell!
Give your friend a call and catch up over the phone!

Give your friend a call and catch up over the phone!

    • Texting- I wouldn’t recommend this as your main form of communication because it can get so impersonal, but definitely send your friends a text every once in awhile. Especially if you haven’t talked in awhile, send a quick, simple text like “hey! I miss you! Hope you’re having a great summer :) ”. More than likely, they’ve just been busy and haven’t thought about keeping in touch, but sending a simple text will remind them! Texting is also a great quick way to make someone’s day. Shelly sends the CL Interns sweet texts all the time like “Who is the most fabulous person in the world?! You!” It’s short and sweet and you never know when someone’s day needs brightening!
Sending a friend a simple text message is a great way to get back in touch!

Sending a friend a simple text message is a great way to get back in touch!

So, there you have it! Although you might be on opposite sides of the country from each other this summer, you and your friends still have a lot of great ways to keep in touch!

Patrice is an intern with College Lifestyles (TM). She is a journalism major at William Woods University and is a member of Alpha Chi Omega! She is going to miss her Sorority sisters a lot over the summer, but looks forward to keeping in touch many different ways!

    Sorority & Greek Life FYI!

sorority-life-tagged-7299179-200-150Here at CL, we talk a lot about sororities and Greek life in general. However, we realized many of you may not know anything about Greek life or would like to know more about it. So some of the CL Interns and I teamed up to answer some questions we were given by a reader and fellow blogger, Alyssa.

Q: “What is rushing? How do you pick what sorority you want to belong to?”

I think this is the best place to start. When you make the decision to join a sorority, you go through a process called “rush” or also known as “recruitment.” The process and length of time is different for every school, but it can be anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks. During this process, you visit each of the sororities on campus, and get to know the girls in the chapter. Each night, it gets more and more formal, and you gradually eliminate houses from your “choices” and in the end you have your top choice, and you hope that they pick you back. The girls in the houses are also considering each girl that comes through for rush, and deciding which one’s they think would be the best fit for the house.

Q: “What if a girl is not popular?”

It is a common thought that sororities, especially the rushing process is just one big popularity contest. I can’t speak for every college because I’ve obviously only been through rush at my school which is a lot less intense than many schools. However, it is not about being “popular” or anything like that, it’s just about who fits in with the sorority. Most chapters have membership criteria (for example, ours are academic interest, character, financial responsibility, leadership ability and personal development). The sororities use these criteria to determine whether or not a girl would be a good fit for the sorority based on their conversations with them.

Q: “What does it mean to be in a sorority? What are the benefits?”

Anyone who is or has been a member of a sorority can tell you there are tons of benefits. Sisterhood being one of the main benefits but also you gain a lot of confidence, you learn a lot about leadership, you gain life skills you’ll need after college, and so much more. I could talk about all the benefits forever! I would strongly recommend going Greek to anyone who is considering it because there are so many benefits, and it is truly unlike anything else.

As Kaitlyn says: “There are many benefits!  Sisterhood is something you really just have to experience.  I gained so many friendships with people I consider some of my “best friends” now!”

Elizabeth agrees with Kaitlyn: “The benefits are that you meet some really great girls that become your sisters. They always have your back and surprise you and just are there for you when you need someone. There are also add bonuses of getting to meet other sisters from other chapters of your sorority – like Shelly and some other of my intern family are AST sisters that I get to hang and chat with now!”

Q: “Are there sororities for popular people, athletes, geeks or is everyone in together?”

From my experience, every sorority has a wide range of girls not just one certain type of group.

Kaitlyn sums it up well: “People tend to gravitate to a sorority where people are similar to them, just like any other group.  But, usually, there is a well rounded group of people in every sorority.”

Q: “Does everyone live in a big house together and eat meals together?”

Every college is different as far as the sorority living arrangements. Some schools have sorority houses where everyone lives together, and some don’t have houses at all, and everything in between. At my school, every member lives in the house all 4 years (that is rare!). We don’t eat our meals together (at least not in the house), though, because unlike some sorority houses at other schools, we don’t have a cook. We eat at the dining hall like the non-Greek students. Every school is different as far as what they do for sorority houses, so it just depends on the schools rules!

Q: “Do people really treat each other like sisters? Do they get along with other sororities too?”

Just like biological sisters, sorority sisters have disagreements and are not always as nice as they should be. However, the girls in the sorority really do become like your sisters and it is a really special bond that is unlike anything else.

Kaitlyn: “I would say that most of the time it is “sisterly.”  However, like always when there is a large group of girls together, sometimes tempers can flare or people just have bad days. Sometimes there are “rival” sororities, but generally, people tend to get along.

Elizabeth: “It’s a bunch of girls in close quarters so of course there will be some disagreements and fights, but doesn’t that happen everywhere no matter if your Greek or not? The point is I couldn’t live without my sisters because they are an extension of my family – when my mom passed away I was down in Texas with them and they totally took care of me AND my family back home. We don’t always get along [with other sororities] but we always have respect for each other.

Q: Are the same sororities at each college or does each college have different sororities with different names?”

There are different sororities at every college and the number of sororities varies. Some colleges don’t have sororities at all, and some have 25. It just depends on how big the school is and where chapters have been established.
