CL Director Dish – Shelly’s Favorite Decade and Why!
June 9, 2010 by Shelly Marie
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Shelly's Dish, The Dish
Last week, I asked the lovely interns of College Lifestyles their favorite decade and why. As always, I was amazed with the answers (such a great group of women!), and now it is my turn to dish on my favorite decade.
Ever since I can remember, I had this amazing love for the 1940s, the golden age. Something about the 40s is crisp and beautiful. If you happen to sit next to me on a plane (and if you don’t know if you have), I am the person watching Casablanca, my all time favorite movie. If you are a ‘friendly’ air-seat neighbor, I typically tell you all about the movie and my love for the 1940s.
Personally, I feel the 40s emphasized a great natural glamour, beauty, and romance. Black and white movies have such a glamourous feel. The ladies were simply divine – Ingrid Bergman, Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, Ginger Rogers, and Lauren Bacall.
The 40s also is ‘home’ to my favorite style of music – jazz and big band. Decade of the greatest Christmas song, White Christmas by Bing Crosby. My Pandora stations include the great Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Billie Holiday. Men sipped their ‘beverages’ and were dressed from head to toe. They opened the door for ladies and took our coats. (So, have we realized I am a romantic!)
Finally, the 40s showed strength. WWII showed the amazing strength of women holding down the home, while men went to war. Music continued with the Big Band Sounds of ‘In the Mood’ and swing (my 2nd favorite style of dance – Argentine Tango first).
How could one not dance to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy? TCM (Turner Classic Movies) is great!
Yes, I love the 40s!
Shelly Marie Redmond, MS, RD, LDN is the Executive Director/CEO of College Lifestyles. She loves the 40s! In fact, she planned a ‘Swing Dance Mixer’ while a collegian in her sorority – was it a hit? Well, everyone still talks about it! Not to mention, her entire wedding cocktail hour was music from Frank, Dean, and Billie!
The CL Interns Dish, ‘My favorite decade is…..’
June 4, 2010 by Shelly Marie
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, The Dish, The Intern Dish, Weekly Dish
This week, I decided gave the CL Interns an opportunity to jump into a time machine to take them to their favorite decade!
When asked, ‘What is your favorite decade?’ I received these fabulous responses……
My favorite decade is the 80′s! I wish I could have lived in them (other than the 6 months I did). I love the fashion and music, especially the clothes! I love parties and Halloween when I can dress up in 80′s clothes!
~Alle
My favorite decade is the 90s because it produced such crazy fashion and fun TV shows!
~Emily H
My favorite decade is the ‘60s. I love all of the fashions that came out of the decade, which also probably explains why I like watching Mad Men so much.
~Jacqui
~Megan
The 50s tops my list of favorite decades! I love their simplistic style and the “housewife” looks.
~Sarah
Favorite Decade: The 60′s baby! A decade focused on music, love and the expansion of creativity, what could be better? Good people looking for a good time, the way life should be lived!
~Kate
My favorite decade is the 90s, of course! I miss the days of playing Donkey Kong on the Super Nintendo and being totally creeped out by ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ I would have traded all of my Babysitters Club books for a chance to be on ‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’ or to meet the cast of ‘The Mighty Ducks’ or ‘The Sandlot.’ I would go back to the ’90s any day… NOT! Talk to the hand!
~Kaitlyn K
Oh no! Do I have to pick just one?! =) My favorite decade would probably be the 60s! If I could have been a teenager in the mid to late 60s, I would have wanted my life to be very similar to Meg Pryor’s on the television show “American Dreams.” I could have been a regular on American Bandstand, and I would totally have been at the airport when the Beatles first came across the pond! Besides the music, I also love the fashion of the 60s! Skirts with cardigans, and belted dresses with short white gloves and a clutch purse! So cute and classy! <3
~Becky
My favorite decade is the SEVENTIES! I absolutely love the music of the time: The Beatles, Bob Marley, The Eagles, The Who, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and the list goes on and on. Fascinated by the music festivals like WOODSTOCK, I can’t even imagine the energy of such an event. I love everything about the hippie movement: their ideals, free spirit, and way of life. They just seem so free, peaceful and truly did live every moment of life to the fullest. I’m jealous! I wish we could mimic the 70′s today!
~Pooja
DEFINITELY the 1920s. All that jazz, flappers, speakeasies. I love the Great Gatsby style and it seemed like so much fun. Fabulous! I think I was alive in the 20s in a past life hahaha.
~Briana
My favorite decade is the 1960′s because I’m all about colorful tie-dye and promoting peace : )
~Hillary
Although I love the trends and fashions of other decades, I would have to say my favorite decade is the 1920′s. I think the 1920′s was a very profound generation, especially for American culture. People went from the early and simplistic 1900′s lifestyles to the Roaring Twenties, an era that introduced to us jazz music, swing dance, brand new films straight from Hollywood, the broadcasting revolution known as radio, and the empowering role reversal of women! This is a time that women were starting to be recognized just as equal as men, and able to get the same job as them and also enter college…which is when the “co-ed” truly began! How phenomenal is that!
~Michelle
My favorite decade is the 60s. I love the tye-die, the peace, love and flower movement. I feel things were a lot more free and things were more widely accepted…I mean, Woodstock?!?! I would have loved to be there. I also feel like neighborhoods and public places were more safe and crime was a lot less. The music rocked, the people rocked and everyone wanted world peace. The civil rights movement was happening, schools were being integrated. That was a huge part of our nation’s history and to be a part of that would be a great experience. I also loved the 70s for pretty much the same reason.
~Molly
My favorite decade was the 1960s! It is my favorite because I love all of the change and revolution! I also love the fashion, from the hippie-flower child look to Jackie Kennedy. The music from this decade was also great! The Beatles are one of my favorite bands!
~Kate
My favorite decade is the 60s, because I love the music, the fashion, and
basically everything about it.
~Lana
My favorite decade is the 1950s. Elvis Presley revolutionized the Rock n’ Roll industry. Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, Marlon Brando, Humphrey Bogart and James Dean changed the face of the movie industry, and brought out some now classic films that every generation knows and loves. Marylin Monroe even expressed the love that all women had for diamonds in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The 50s was an iconic period and it embellished beauty like no other decade prior.
~Samantha
The 50’s. Because I absolutely belong in a diner in a big poodle skirt (I know I know, that not all the 50’s were about) but I just love shakes and burgers. Plus 50’s is when interior spaces for the average person began to take off!
~Kendell
My favorite decade is… now! We’ve continued good traditions of previous decades, learned from the mistakes of the past and can enjoy the present. It’s interesting to me to see how technology is changing, and how that affects society and the way we live. I’ve also never really “lived” in another decade… it’s great to be young in a world that’s constantly changing, so I can be a chameleon along with it:)
~Jenny
My favorite decade is the 1940s. I have always been fascinated by World War Two and the courage that everyone had during that time is admirable. They cared about style and class but also about practicality and function. The 1940s were a huge time of transition, out of the Great Depression and bringing back the flare of the roaring 20s with a more tactical, dignified approach. Plus everyone seemed to know how to dance, something envied by someone as accident prone and clumsy as myself.
~Audrey
My favorite decade is definitely the 80’s. I love the fashion, the music, just the fun spirit people seemed to have during this period. And of course I made it just in time to call myself an 80’s baby (born 1989)!
~Chrissy
My favorite decade is really a tie between the 90′s and 2000-2010. You can’t go wrong with some of the incredible music of the 90′s, and I love the fashion styles of the last decade
~Kelsey
My favorite decade is the fifites! Between Gene Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Ava Gardner all making movies, theGolden Age of Broadway, and the prevalence of pearls in television shows, it is pretty much my idea of heaven.
~Karen
You heard from some of our CL Interns; now tell us your favorite decade!
Shelly Marie Redmond, MS, RD, LDN is the Executive Director/CEO of College Lifestyles. She loves getting the ‘dish’ on the CL Interns, and is in love with the classiness and style of the 1940s! Bring back the Rat Pack and Casablanca!
CL Director Dishes on Summer!
May 31, 2010 by Shelly Marie
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Shelly's Dish, The Dish
Hello lovely CL readers! I am sure you have read the fantabulous articles of the CL Interns Dish on Summer; and it is only fair that I give a bit of a dish as well!
So…in my own words…you have the dish of Shelly…..
- My goal for this summer is to…….
That is such a tough one! As the CL Interns, I am a huge goal setter. I formerly had the ‘let me do as much as I can’ issue, and would typically be so boggled down with work, I would forget something. However, I learned the ONLY way I could succeed is to set goals. My big goal for this summer is to learn everything I can about an herb garden! Sounds bizarre, but I recently purchased and plated herbs (basil and mint); and I am slowing adding more to the bunch (including a tomato plant!). Right now, I am using simple pots/potting soil. The good news: My dad visited me this past weekend, and we outlined a small plot for the herb garden. I grew up with a garden, and it is so nice to return to such a clean way of eating! Nothing is better than home grown food!
- What are your favorite summer activities….
I live in Louisiana, so let’s say one word – HOT! I am not big on ‘lay-ing’ out – this is very obvious from my fair complexion. But I do like most of the summer activities others like – the pool and backyard grilling! I am also a crazy Barnes and Nobles freak! I can stay in their for hours! Being a little older (gulp!), I have come to love sitting on my swing with a chilled coffee!
- How do you plan to stay in touch with your college friends?
I love this question! I will put a ‘Shelly spin’ on this question! I stay in touch with my friends from college pretty much the same way others do – Facebook, email, text, AND a weekend getaway!
And I am adding a few of my own!
- What are your biggest summer suggestions to college students?
Being the director/CEO of this lovely firm, I am amazed at the continued dedication of our CL interns! I am all about having fun, believe me; but I think it is important to achieve a great fun/work/college balance. Have fun with your friends! Along with having fun with friends and your summer job, do something educational – visit the library and check out a book on a topic you enjoy; visit the bookstore; attend a local cooking class; visit the art showing in your town; research companies you would enjoy working for.
- A crazy summer memory (while in college)……..
Too many! But part of my dietetic internship was to attend a sleep-over diabetes camp for one week. I am not the biggest wilderness person in on the planet, but I could handle a little bit of camping. The interns stayed in a ‘cabin’ and rounds were at 2:30 am. Well….to make a long story short – imagine wilderness, darkness (only flashlight) walking to the kids cabin. Pretty much I thought of every scary movie on the planet; and I was convinced some evil bear, flying squirrel, and icky snake was going to eat me. Lucky, the boogie man and bears were busy the week I was resident; and I was so happy to return to my home

College Lifestyles is currently accepting applications for its virtual internship for the Summer/Fall 2010 year.
College Lifestyles is the premier nutrition, etiquette, and lifestyle firm for savvy co-eds. College Lifestyles prides itself in bringing the most current information on nutrition, the sorority experience, etiquette, fashion, health, careers tips, lifestyle, and image to it’s readers through our website, e-newsletter, Facebook page, Twitter, and presentations.
Currently, College Lifestyles is on the ‘look-out’ for interns to share some fantastic stories and PR work!
In addition to aspiring writers, we are looking for interns who are ‘go-getters’ and who are not afraid to set up interviews/pod-cast; perform interviews for posting on our website; who can develop media and advertising packets.
Interns can range from freshman to graduate students and can be any major; but we would prefer the following majors:
- PR/Marketing.
- Business.
- Nutrition/Dietetics/Health.
- Fashion Merchandising.
- English.
- Journalism.
- Mass communication.
Requirements for internship include:
- Daily internet/computer access.
- Camera (for snap shots/pics).
- 15 minute biweekly con call with our director. (Every other week)
- 5-10 hours week time commitment.
Applications are due by 4/23/10 (or sooner!) via email to info@collegelifestyles.org and smarie93@hotmail.com
While this is not a paid position, students will gain worlds of experience to build your portfolio, working with teams (via email and Facebook), networking with peers, interviewing some pretty ‘great’ individuals, share your talents with the world (!) and showcase your talents.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions, we encourage you to ‘Spread the Word!’ on our internship!
For an application packet and full description of our Intern responsibilites, please email Shelly at info@collegelifestyles.org or smarie93@hotmail.com!
Good luck!!!

As she says, ‘Yes, I once was an intern and had to do that. And yes, I learned nothing at that internship.’

Where Has All the Sisterhood Gone? Part 1 – Embrace the Laughter!
March 28, 2010 by Shelly Marie
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Sisterhood Development, Sorority Life
Last weekend at SEPC, I had the pleasure of presenting ‘Where Has All the Sisterhood Gone?’ to a full room (YAH!) of fabulous ladies.
I firmly believe we (in sorority life) tend to lose our ‘sisterhood bonding’ for the exact same reasons a relationship ‘lost the spark.’ We may get too comfortable (ie – hanging out in the suite/chapter room 24/7); we may get too busy (class, work, study group, other organizations, and the responsibility of running a fabulous chapter!); and we may ‘get used to one another’ (ie – when a relationship gets boring). I can go on and on; but I firmly believe we, as sisters, forgot how to be sisters.
During my presentation, I told a hysterical story of an event that happened with my sister Susan. (lets just say it involved me taking a spill down a flight of stairs in an airport and Susan’s priceless reaction). To this day, Susan will call and say (through laughter and tears), ‘Remember when you fell down those stairs (insert laughter).’ Do I need to tell you she is one of those who laughs when folks fall down?

Susan and I on my special day! Sis + Sis after 13 years!!!
Seriously, think about the last time you had a really great laugh! I mean, a laugh where you fall out your chair and are crying of laughter! Many of us can think of the ‘Remember when stories with your family members at the holidays.’ Now, when was the last time your chapter had a big laugh? We want to embrace the laughter in our chapter!
How can we Embrace the Laughter in our chapter?
- Remember when? Do the exact ‘Remember when…’ with your sisters. Have an envelope at every chapter meeting and ask for individuals to write a story to place in the envelope. Depending on time, read one or two stories at the meeting.
- Go to or rent a FUNNY movie. (Just to note, my funny movies are Office Space, Happy Gilmore, and Billy Madison) This is great around stressful times (think mid-terms, finals week).
- Play Madlibs. Sounds cheesy? No way. Madlibs has specific ‘games‘ for the ‘Fabulous lady!‘ When completed, go around and read sentence by sentence. Use this during a break during recruitment practice.
- Improv. Your chapter is bound to have an ‘actress.‘ Split into teams and pick events/topics to Improv (Glee, music videos, best reality show, cartoon characters, etc).
- Play twister. Enough said!
- Photobooth. Go to the local mall and find a photobooth. Bring silly props and take tons of pics! Better yet – make your own photobooth pics/props! Make a bulletin board of the pics and have at your chapter meeting.
Get creative. Laughter is such a wonderful thing AND a great part of both friendships and sisterhood. Think about it, years from now, you all can call each other and go ‘Remember when…..’

She loves the fact she has sisters who she can laugh with and lean on, and is so sad when she hears ‘My chapter just does not have a sisterhood bond.’ Stay tuned to her ‘Sisterhood Intervention’ program she is developing!
